Back out of loan before signing

Can I back out of a property loan before signing or closing? Would I have to pay? I am assuming appraisal fees, but would there be anything else?
Thanks!

Yes you can. You need to request the mortgage lender to stop all the paperwork on the mortgage and tell them that you want to walk away from the deal at this point of time.

As you haven't closed on the loan, you won't be liable for paying anything if you cancel the deal now.
