Does the life estate recipient still have to make payments upon the grantors death?

We have a dear friend who just passed away. We are just trying to understand the circumstances of his property and his estate. He did a life estate in which the person was paying him for the property as he remained living on the property. He has since passed and was just wondering if the recipient is still required to make the payment until the agreed upon sale price is paid in full. If so, to whom does that payment go to?
