Hi. I am renovating my basement. All of the basic work done, but it doesn't look nice yet since paint and carpet remain to be completed, plus I need to decorate it.

Also, the furniture etc. that will eventually be back in the basement is temporarily stored in various rooms of the house. So the house looks messy. Boxes here and there, chairs out of place, etc.

It could take a few weeks to get the paint and carpet in. I would prefer to get the appraisal done sooner rather than later.

Question: Do I need to have the basement finished before appraisal?

Will the mess in the house affect the appraised value?

Thank you.

Hi renooberator!

Welcome to forums!

It will be better if the basement is finished prior to the appraisal. Once the renovation is complete, the appraised value of the property could be better. Moreover, a messy home won't be considered very good at the time of appraisal.

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.

Hello renooberator?

Well, you can get an appraisal several ways.
1. You can find a business in your town that gives appraisals. You take your item in and they'll appraise it for you.
2.You can find a on-line source that can help you. If you google it, depending on your item, a couple of different websites should come up. Check to make sure its a reliable source. You can send in pictures or you can send it to the company itself.
3. Check out a book at your library and do some research on it.

Perhaps this will best answer your question:

First of all, most lenders require interior photos of every room, so if the house is cluttered and messy, the lender will see it.

Second, the value of the property will be based on the "as is" condition, not what it will be worth when the work is done, so if you want full credit for the finished basement, it should be complete. It doesn't have to be furnished and decorated necessarily, but it needs to be finished.

I hope this helps!
