second was taken off so that house could, and was, sold thru short sale
the bank is now coming back to us for payment on second
we would like to pay nothing but would settle

Hi tenstriker,

If there is a second mortgage on the property, then they have the rights to collect the dues from you. You can deny the payments to them. You should negotiate with them in order to check out whether or not they are ready to forgive the dues. It would be the lender's discretion whether or not he would forgive the dues.
