We were in the process of doing a loan modification and to our surprise her home was sold at the auction last Thursday. What can we do now to buy back the property?

You should contact the lender and clarify the matter. You should also check out whether or not your state offers redemption of property. If yes, then you should pay off the back payments and fees and redeem the property. Thanks, Jerry
