My parents hold title as joint tenants and want to add me to their deed. No mortgage on the property in California. Do they file a quit claim? Will the property be reassessed by the county tax collector in Los Angeles if they file this change? What are the steps?

Hi kuebler,

Your parents will have to sign a quitclaim deed in order to add your name to the property deed. There are chances that the property will be reassessed by the county tax collector in Los Angeles. However, whether or not the property taxes would increase, will depend upon the value of your property.

Thanks

Thanks for the information. Also, if we do the quit claim deed, do we need to record it before one or both of them pass away? Can I wait to record it after their deaths and if so, would it be still be a legal document?

Hi kuebler!

Welcome to forums!

It is always better to notarize and record the deed before the death of any of the grantors. Once you record it, the deed would be considered as a legal document.

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
