There was an individual calling to make an offer to negotioate with our lender to lower our mortgage payment. He wanted 1750.00 up front before anything was done. Is this a scam?

This could be a scam...... you never know!! There has been several such cases in the post sub-prime mortgage crisis period. Whenever a loan modification company demands a good amount of upfront fee, you need to be very cautious. In most of the cases, they are scams. I'd personally not want to give them any upfront fees of such large amount, until they have successfully negotiated the modification deal.

Do not talk to any one who asks for an upfront money for loan modification

Tell them you will pay them only after they cna get the modification done

They are a huge scam. My girlfriend paid a total of $2995.00. The company disappeared twice and the third time (Now) - they can't be found. I called the Attorney General's Office (Eric Holder), and they gave me a number for the FBI (410) 265-8080. The FBI has set-up a task force, because there are too many people/organizations asking for fees to negotiate/lower people's mortgages. SCAM!!!

the first tipoff to anyone who receives a phone call from "an individual calling to make an offer to negotiate with our lender to" do just about anything, be it reduce your mortgage payment, refinance to a ridiculously low rate, etc.

hang up immediately before you are ensnared by someone whose only desire is to make money off the backs of the unaware and the uneducated.
