I faced a medical emergency in early 2009. Fortunately enough, my debts were forgiven with charity care. But, there are 2 bills from third parties through the hospital. These bills have ended up collections. Though I can pay it off now, I want to know whether or not I should deal with the collection agency directly and ask for pay for delete (PFD) or go for the HIPAA process? I would ideally like to get some of those entries removed. Can you please advice on how to handle my situation? Thank you so much!

Hi Curt,

In my opinion, it will be better if you could contact your collection agency and negotiate with them for a pay for delete. As you have the ability, you can pay off the debt and you will also be able to remove the negative item from your credit report if your collection agency accepts your request for a pay for delete.

Take care.

I agree- negotiate directly with the collection agency for a PFD. Make sure you get any agreement in writing before ponying up a dime. Collection agencies are notorious for taking your money and then still trying to collect the difference at a later time. Document, document, document!
