will adding my name to a mortgage as "joint tenant " have a negative impact on my credit score if the mortgage has fallen behind in payments?

You cannot add your name to the mortgage as a joint tenant. You will be able to add your name to the property deed as a joint tenant. If you add your name to the property deed, it won't have any impact on your credit report as your name is not mentioned in the mortgage docs as a co-borrower. Your credit will only get affected due to late payments when you are a co-borrower of the loan.
