I don't have any credit history, I have never had any credit cards. Everything is in the name of my husband. We want to buy our first home first house after my husband retires in next 3 years. I want to establish some credit and have applied for credit cards. But due to no credit history, I haven't been able to receive any credit cards. How can I get a real card? I just want a real credit card. Any ideas or suggestions?

Hi ABN,

In order to establish your own credit history, you can ask your husband to add you as an authorized user to his credit cards. After that, you can apply for secured credit cards which are a great way to establish credit history. You can contact banks/financial institutions who offer such cards and apply for it. These two options will help you establish your credit history. Then you can start applying for unsecured credit cards.

Take care

Hello ABN!

There's no universal marker that says you automatically get or don't get a credit card. A higher score just means you're more likely to get a card, loan, or financing. Generally as long as you're over 620 you can find someone willing to give you a card. I would recommend trying for a bank card they're usually a bit more giving although I'd recommend Citi highly and gas cards are also usually pretty easy to get. If all else fails you can get a prepaid card and build up over time to it and eventually get a regular card after a few months or so.

Having your husband add you as an AU is a great way to get started. Just make sure he adds you onto his oldest cards with low credit utilization ratios. That will help give your scores a nice boost.

Then wait for a few months to see where your FICO scores stand. You may be able to skip the secured credit card route and just apply for a good rewards credit card jointly with your husband. Always pay your bills on time and in full, and you'll have a good credit score very soon.
