Ok now I find that my spouse’s credit report mentions that he has 2 credit card accounts – one in 2004 and one in 2005. My spouse is sure about the 2005 account but not about the 2004 account. Both of these accounts have a status of "charged off as bad debt". This is affecting his credit and he wants to get this right. If he can get a PFD with the one that was opened in 2005 should he just pay it? He will not pay the other one unless it is proven that it is legit. Any advice is appreciated.

You should first check out whether or not the debt has been sold off to any collection agency. If yes, then you should ask them to validate the debt. If they validate the debt, then I feel, it will be a good option to pay off the debt and get rid of them.

A PFD is ideal as it will remove all the negative entries from your credit reports. If you can negotiate it after validating the debt and get everything in writing from the collection agency, then go ahead and do it.
