Hello,

I live in Florida in Pasco county. I will have to go to New York for a while to work on my marriage. My question is I have a house here and my mother will stay here and live in the house. She depends financially on me.. Can I still be eligible for the homestead exemption? Does my mom have to be on the deed or not? If so, can we have the deed on both names?
Can you explain more and tell me the options not to loose my tax exemption?
Thank you very much.

Hi capfrehel,

Your mother has to be on the deed in order to claim homestead exemption. Both your name as well as your mother's name can be mentioned on the property deed. As far as receiving tax exemption is concerned, you should have a word with your tax adviser and take his opinion in this matter.

Thanks,

Jerry
