MNy mother in law purchased a home in Florida with her friend in 2005. Her friend is hospitalized in a coma. They have mortgage insurance. My mother in law is worried she will lose the house because she can't afford to pay the entire mortgage by herself. Can you help with some ideas and/or information. Thank you for your time.

Hi arg,

If the friend dies, then his/her heirs will get the friend's share of the property. They, along with your mother-in-law, can refinance the home loan. Thus, the friend's heirs and your mother-in-law can then make payments to lender and save the property. Thus, your mother-in-law will not remain solely responsible for paying the dues.
