My whole problem wasn't that I couldn't afford the payments, it was mismanagement and then when we had problems after the hurricanes, I fell far behind. I promised myself that I would NEVER let that happen again. My interest rate isn't high (6.12%) and my payments only went up by $50, which I can still afford. I am gonna go though credit counseling just to make sure I stay on the right track.
Dealing with foreclosure was very stressful and I wish everyone who is still dealing with it, lots of luck. Thanks again for all the advice. |

Don't worry Michelle it happens to the best of us . Credit counseling is a smart thing to do. You probably will also want to take a look at your credit report so that you can improve your credit score. Typically when payments are missed on a mortgage it really lowers a persons credit score. However, you can take some step to get your credit back on track so that when you need to finance anything you will not run into any problems. _________________ Cliff Pape

That's a good decision Michelle. Looks you're brave and have the guts to fight out the situation. This is indeed appreciable. Keep your cool, don't panic and simply give a fresh look at the entire situation. I mean, think positive and let's hope the credit counseling works for you. By the way, is it for the Chapter 13 bankruptcy?

Jessica, I decided not to file Chapter 13 when my mortgage company approved the loan modification. I want to do the credit counseling for myself, just so I can get on track and stay on track. I make enough money where I should have hundreds left after paying bills, however it doesn't seem that I am budgeting well. I want to get all that under control.
Cliff, you're right about my credit score plummeting. I hope a credit counselor can give me some advice on what I can do to improve it.
Thanks again everyone for all your help. |

That's really good Michelle. If you think there's still room for some tight budgeting, you may very well have a talk with a credit counselor. And regarding credit repair, try doing it yourself instead of taking the services of any credit repair company. There are many out there who take money from debtors but don't really help them fix their credit. You may check out the Credit Repair Tool as well just in case you'd like to analyze your credit.
Do let me know if you have further questions and feel free to share your experiences here in the forum.
