We have a son that is onSS disability. He was living in a mobile home and it was destroyed by a tornado last week. We would like to help him buy a small house instead of another mobile home. I had heard somewhere that persons with SSDI could purchase a home with a low down payment and low interest. Is that correct and if so how do we find out how to go about it.

Hi

There are certain programs that help the people with disability to buy a home of their own. But They not many in number, though. I've heard of a 'Home Choice' program of Fannie Mae which requires a low down payment (usually $500) and most closing costs are also paid. HUD's section 8 Homeownership program also provides good financing options to the disabled. Some of the states also have their own programs. For instance, the state of Maryland provides people with certified disabilities with loans at about 3% interest rate. But these programs are rare.
