I thought it would only take up to 72 hours. Still no word yet if I have the final go ahead with my loan. Could this be a bad thing?

With the way the economy is, the lenders are more cautious while approving your loan. You should wait for a week or two for USDA to send your loan package back to the lender. It has almost been a week since your lender sent USDA your loan package. You can wait for another 7 days. If you still do not get any response from your lender, you can definitely contact them. You can also call them now and inquire about the current status of your mortgage application.
