My dad has alzheimer's and is 80 and my mother is 85 and my sister and I want to know the following:

1) We are on a quit claim deed for their house in Dearborn, Michigan in Wayne County. Once our parents pass on, will our property and school taxes be raised?

2) If my sister and I put our names on the property deed now, will they raise the property and school taxes once both parents pass on?

I ask these questions cause there are new home owners in their neighborhood that are paying double to triple what my parents are paying in property and school taxes for similar houses.

Thanks,

Mike Albano

Hi Michael,

As per my knowledge, any property is re-assessed by the local assessor at the time of transfer of the property to the new owner.

And hence may increase the taxes according to the current provisions applicable in the region.

Hi Micheal,

I don't think the property taxes will be raised after your parents' death. And, even if you and your sister put your names on the deed, it's not going to affect the taxes.

I agree with Frampton here. As he says that only an evaluation on your property can say whether taxes on it will increase.

I think you can consult a tax advisor on this issue.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks,

Sara.
