What is an assumption process?

When my wife and I divorced, my name was removed from the deed to the house and I was to be removed from the mortgage as well. She did not do so, and allowed the home to be foreclosed which is ruining my credit. I was not financially responsible for the house and have paperwork to prove this. Is there anything I can do to have this removed from my credit?
