Hello- Didn't your insurance company send you any notices saying the policy was going to lapse and not renew? Also, do you know if the damages happened while the policy was in effect or not?

I am inclined to ask the same question as sweeny... I recently had gotten a notice to cancel b/c the payment was short $11. So I would think the same thing that you would have gotten notices in the mail of cancellation. An insurance company has to provide you that notice of cancellation.
It is your responsibility to provide your insurance information to your mortgage company if you have changed companies as well.

If your insurance company failed to notify you, then I would think they are responsible for the claim.

You might be able to find out your recourse by contacting the National Association of Insurance Commissioners http://www.naic.org/
I would start there.

Your only option right now is to pay your insurance from pocket until you can get this straight with your mortgage company.
who is the mortgage company?

although, if your insurance company failed to notify you of cancellation, they can't just cancel with out proper notice.

if they still try to not pay the claim, go to the website i provided before.
