My husband filed bankruptcy last year. We lost our home during the bankruptcy, and it has been several months. Now the mortgage company called and said that I was legally responsible for the debt. My name was never on the mortgage, but they said the due to some homestead law I was responsible and that it was the same as if my husband died. They told me that I was legally responsible and would face foreclosure. How could they do that?

If its your state law then they are unfortunately right. In homestead states such as California if one spouse owes the other does too.
