| My mother had a stroke. She has a monthly retirement. She`s in a nursing home, has about $20,000 ca...Mother had a stroke .We own the home she lives in. In Michigan. we will have to apply for medicaid in 100 days. She has bills due, I have pwr of attorney for medial and finacial matters. Can I pay her bills such as power, gas, electricity and such from her assests, even though, we own her house? The bills are under her name. I don`t know if this is legal or not? |

Hi tpettett,
Welcome to forums.
You can pay your mother's bills from her assets but it depends upon what is stated on the power of attorney. That is, the power of attorney should mention what legal rights your mother has give you through the POA.
In case of Financial Power of Attorney, the POA representative (here it's you) may have the right to use the principal's (your mom) money and assets to pay bills or sell off property or sign on a contract on behalf of the principal.
All your rights as the POA are put forward in the power of attorney document.
