I understand there are a set of federal exemptions and a set of state (MN) exemptions, can these be combined or are they mutualy exclusive

As far as I know, the exemptions can be combined. But I will suggest you to contact your bankruptcy attorney and take his opinion in this matter. He will be able to guide you in a better way.
