I recently got married and am taking my husbands last name. i have chnaged over most of my documents. I bought my home under my maiden name and I am the only party. There is a mortgage on the home. Do i have to update my name on the deed, if so how do i do it. I was told a quit claim deed. But I am not selling the home to myself just making a correction on the deed. I live in NJ and I dont want any problems when it comes to taxes, rebates or other legal matters. But i dont want to spend 500 just chnaging my last name if i dont have to. Could i leave the home in my maiden name and if so would there be a problem with selling it or taxes?

Hi Moonsnake,

I think it would be better to change your maiden name on the deed to your married name. Though it's just a change of name, you'll have to use a quitclaim deed. Get hold of a quitclaim deed form of your state and fill it out. Write your maiden name as the grantor of the property and your married name as the grantee to the property. Once you sign the deed, get it notarized and recorded at the county recorder's office.

Thanks
