New credit card law will affect students

Shared by Sara on Tue Feb 23, 2010 3:36 am

When President Barack Obama signed into law the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, it included a clause which stated that no one under the age of 21 will be able to get a credit card unless someone cosigns for them. The cosigner can be their parents, spouse or guardian.

Finally, the new law has taken into effect from Monday, 22 Feb, 2010. It is expected that this new law will help prevent the students from starting new careers clogged with debt. If a person under the age of 21 is unable to get a co-signer, then he/she will have to show the banks that he/she has the financial capability to pay off a credit card. It would be the bank's discretion whether or not such consumers would get a credit card prior to the age of 21.

Hi Sara,

I believe this is a very good move by the Govt. to curb lavish spending on college campuses and encourage responsible lending. Those under the age of 21 often do not have the experience to take a well-informed financial decision. They get easily tempted by the generously available credit cards and lucrative offers they make. This often leads them to financial catastrophe as they end up being in a mess of debts, which takes them years to clean up.

Hence, it's no doubt a good way of teaching the young adults a lesson in responsible spending. This new change in the credit card laws will also please the parents as their children will not be able to get a credit card without informing them, unless they (the children) can show their financial ability to make the payments.
