Are we set to have a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency?

Shared by Savior70 on Sat Jul 04, 2009 3:41 am

In an attempt to protect the consumers from unscrupulous practices and help make financial products easier to understand, President Obama has sent a 152 page draft bill that proposes to create a Consumer Financial Protection Agency. It also proposes to set uniform rules that will govern both the banks and the non-banks. This move is expected to improve transparency, monitor the financial services so far left unregulated, simplify financial documents for consumers and make the banks and non-banks subject to a specific set of enforcement practices.

Hey Savior...Thanks for sharing this important news with the community. I personally feel that this bill would help the consumers in the long run. However, the banks and other financial institutions are completely against this bill.

Apart from them, the Republicans and business groups have also opposed the bill. According to them, this bill would result into another layer of bureaucracy which would make regulation more cumbersome. Moreover, they think it would be a threat to economic freedom. I guess, we'll have to wait and watch whether or not this bill is passed into law.
