Treasury plans a number of actions to speed mortgage relief

Shared by Jerry on Wed Dec 02, 2009 4:05 am

Hi all,

The Govt. seems to have become active to help the struggling borrows with lower payments through loan modification programs. The US Department of Treasury has recently threatened the lenders and loan servicers of monetary penalties and sanctions if they are found lacking in their efforts to help borrowers with the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP).

It has decided to take a number of steps to make sure the lenders and loan servicers, who have so far been reluctant in offering help through modifications, speed up their efforts to turn existing trial modification plans into permanent ones. The Department of Treasury will now be sending 'SWAT' teams to mortgage servicers' offices to look into the causes for delay in offering permanent modification plan to eligible borrowers. The Department of Treasury also requires the loan servicers to report to it on a daily basis on the progress of the HAMP.

When the HAMP was launched in February this year, the target was to help almost 3-4 million borrowers with loan modifications by 2012. But till date, only 651,000 loans have been successfully modified. Almost 375,000 trial modifications are set to expire by the end of this year. Unless these are turned into permanent modification plans, they will revert to previous terms, triggering rise in number of foreclosures.

Thanks,

Jerry

It's not just the lenders and mortgage servicers who are responsible for the slow progress of the HAMP. The Department of Treasury is also concerned about the homeowners who have not submitted the paperwork required to convert trial modification plans into permanent ones. The lenders are required to assess the financial situation of the borrowers while determining their eligibility for the modification program. Unless the borrowers submit the necessary paperwork with the lenders, it's not possible for them to convert trial plans into permanent modification plans. The Treasury plans to provide more information on www.MakingHomeAffordable.gov site to make new applicants aware of what documents they need to apply for the modification program.

The real estate industry has offered mixed reactions regarding for the Treasury's efforts to speed up the process and help more people to receive the benefits of HAMP. The industry has praised the efforts of the administration as they are trying to make the system better. However, there are many people who are of the opinion that the real benefit of the HAMP is still unknown. They have opined that it's hard to judge whether or not HAMP is delaying a horrible problem or is working for the benefit of the people.
