My fiancee and her ex boyfriend bought a house together in New York 4 years ago. Now she needs to get his name off the deed, but she was told to do that, it would cost 2000 dollars. Is there any way to forego that expense if he is willing to take his name off the deed to begin with? I'm completely lost when it comes to state and federal laws on this sort of thing. He did sign a notarized paper stating that he would walk away from the house, and not lay claim to any part of it, in exchange for the 15,000 dollars he spent of hers. I'm not sure if that would have any bearing on the situation or not, maybe only if it had to go in front of a judge. I...or we, would really appreciate any info on this you could provide, thank you.

Welcome Guest,

Your fiancée's ex-boyfriend can simply sign a quit claim deed and transfer his share of the property to her. This will make her the owner of the property. The cost of property deed and other fees may vary from state to state but I don't think this would cost $2000.
