my score is 596
the overwhelming majority of lenders won't be able to work with anyone whose score is below 620. supposedly there are some who will work (on a normal basis - decent rate, etc.) with scores such as you have cited.
search around - inquire wherever you can - and you may find them.

Jeff, that score isn't high enough for most lenders to work with you. That's not to say you can't find one...just won't be easy for you as you search. As for the loan amount, a whole lot of other factors come into play...income, indebtedness, cash availability, etc.
The best bet for most is to beef up the credit score first and then go shopping.
