I have a 2nd Mortgage charge off on my credit, but I have a statement from the lender (then WAMU) stating that it was Paid in Full, but it shouldn't have been. So we sold the house using that paid in full statement. Now the Company is calling it a charge off. What's the best thing to do?

Hi jcotten,

It's strange that your lender sent you a statement stating the debt was paid in full, even though it wasn't. But I believe you do have the right to dispute the charge-off. You have the written document to support your claim that the debt was paid in full. Send the credit bureaus a letter of dispute along with the copy of the statement you received from the lender. If the credit bureaus find your claim valid (based on the statement sent to you by your lender), they will remove the charge-off from your credit report.

It shouldn't have been? Does that mean they sent you the "paid in full" statement by accident? Was it a mistake on their part?
