You will need to write a letter or have an attorney do it for you.

Hi cclue,

Did you contact the lender to find out the actual status of the account? Is it really in collections? If it is not sent for collections, you must dispute it with the credit bureau and have it removed from your report. You need to collect documents from the lender in support of your claim that the account is not in collections and send it to the credit bureau. If the information on your credit is wrong, there is no reason why you should not get a loan. Moreover, there are statutes of limit applicable for collection of debts. If the debt is past the statute of limit, you are not liable to pay it anymore and can request the credit agency to remove it from your report.

I think going for the co-borrower will be a smart move.but again make sure that if the remark is hampering in the loan process now then it will creat problem in future also so make sure you are getting it corrected as soon as possible and by that time continue your efforts for the loan approval.
I think it is not that difficult...

keep in touch....
