We have 4 children and feel they need to stay in familiar surroundings.

You and your spouse can decide amongst yourselves and apply to the court that both of you jointly want to pay off the debts. In such a situation, the court can consider your request. In my opinion, you should first negotiate with your ex-spouse regarding this issue. _________________ Good is the Enemy of Great.
