Do you have to be in default to short sell your home? Can I continue to make payments on my mortgage to keep the defaults off my credit report as much as possible?

Hi hbhome,

It is not necessary for you to be in default in order to short sell the property. However, some lenders do require a borrower to be in default before they accept a short sale offer. Talk to your lender regarding this and explain your current financial hardship. Also, inform them about your intention of making your regular payments till the time the house is short sold.
