Hi,

My wife and her mother bought a house around 1 month before we were married. Myself and my wife have lived in the house since we were married 6 years ago, although my name is not on the mortgage I have been paying the majority of the mortgage since we moved in. Can you tell me what I would need to do to have my name on the deed of the house?

Thanks

E, it's truly up to your wife and her mom as to what they wish to do with the property. I'd have to think that after 6 years of marriage, you'd be worthy of inclusion as an owner of the home, but that's not my call, certainly.

Typically, a quit claim deed can be used to add you to title. If your wife and mother in law choose to simply add you, they can do that and all three of you would be owners. Another option, if they so choose, is for mom to quit claim her portion of ownership to you, thus making you and your wife co-owners and eliminating mom's ownership entirely.

It's time to sit down with the two of them, express your desire, figure out precisely how you would all like to handle things, and then move forward. A real estate attorney can be of assistance in explaining any aspects of such a transaction to the three of you.

Hi e_mclaughlan!

Welcome to forums!

You will have to ask your wife and her mother to sign a quitclaim deed and add your name to the property deed. This will make you one of the owners of the property.

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
