My ex-husband was given our marital home in the divorce back in 2000. I signed a quitclaim deed on the home several times due to lawyer neglect.
This morning I got a certified letter from the county where the property is that the taxes have not been paid in 2, going on 3 years.
My question is, can i get the property back if i pay these taxes? If so, how?
The property is in Georgia.

I would first contact the county to see if you are still on title to the home. If you signed a quitclaim deed, and it was recorded, then you released your rights to the property. Who lives in the property? Is the ex living there? If the home is taken from the state, then your ex will suffer. You may want to talk to the ex and take over the property. Some states allow a party to take title to the property if taxes have been paid for like 5-7 years. You would take legal possession of the property in a process called “adverse possession”. Good Luck

My youngest son lives there now. My ex lives with his newest wife in a different county. I will search the title after Christmas.
Thanks for the info.

Hi Guest,

If you want to save the property, you need to contact your ex-husband and ask him to transfer the property to you. Then you can pay off the property tax which is delinquent for the past 2 years and save your home.

Thanks
