i just signed quit deed today to my ex husband the house we own together in va i live in ma. same time today i just got letter saying i need to pay back tax ..i guess he hasn't paying the tax..and just to make it clean since i have signed the quit deed today he didn't get it to county recording office yet so below is my questions
1. will i be responsible for the tax since i never got the bill for it before
2. since i signed the quit deed does that take me from paying the tax if it gets recorded in county office

please help
Hi rahelen,

Are you the only one on the title? If you are, you are responsible for the property taxes. If both you and your ex are on the title, both of you are responsible for the back taxes. Since you have quitclaimed the property to your ex, you are no longer responsible for the property, which means you are not liable to pay the back taxes. Once the deed is recorded and the title is changed in your ex's name, he will have to pay off the back property taxes.

both of our names is on it..and to be clear i have got letter from city treasure office that stated " notice of lien and demand for payment of tax.."and has my employers name on it .
so I was scared I would have to pay this bill through my pay check...but you are saying to me if the quit deed I signed over yesterday gets recorded in county office before the due date to pay the tax and I should be ook?

quit claim deed is valid once it is notarized. then your ex husband will be answerable to pay taxes as he is the owner of property
