My Mom passed away in 2006, left in her will a lake property to me and my older sister. Older sister was angered by the will and quit claimed her share of the lake property to my brother for $10.00. After 3 years, he will not turn the property over to me, but is trying to extort $500 from me, when the property was never left to him. What are my options?

An attorney may give different advise on this but this is from my gut......Is the property worth more than $1000? If so, pay it. I know it may not seem fair, not what your mother wanted and you may be angry about the circumstance but truly a $500 payment to him is a heck of a lot cheaper than an attorney, court costs and undo stress added to your life and the fighting within the family. Once you have the deed you never have to worry about it again.

Also, think about it this way if you had to split the equity of the home with your sister, as you mother originally wanted, I bet it would be a lot more than $500, right? You are probably the one who will make out the most out of the deal. Pay him before he asks for more and walk away with a smile knowing it's all yours for only $500.
