The National Association of Realtors (NAR) was founded as the National Association of Real Estate Exchange on May 12, 1908 at the YMCA Auditorium in Chicago, Illinois. With 120 founding members, 19 boards, and one state association, the NAR objective was "to encourage professionalism in real estate activities".
The Association recognized the need for specialization in the industry and created different divisions:
- Institute of Real Estate Management
- Women's Council of REALTORS
- Society of Industrial and Office REALTORS
- REALTORS Land Institute
- Counselors of Real Estate
- Council of Real Estate Brokerage Managers
- Commercial Investment Real Estate Institute
- Council of Residential Specialists
- Certified International Property Specialists Network (CIPS)
- Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council
- REALTORS Commercial Alliance
It helps to promote the preservation of the right to own, transfer and use real property. The NAR has developed a standard realtor code of ethics that ensure efficient, effective and ethical real estate business practices. |
