I am in the process of refinancing my home in Texas but am out of state while my wife sells her home in CA. The loan people at Chase told me that I need to be present in the state of Texas to sign the title paperwork for the refi. Is this true? I was not required to do this when I refinanced the same home with WaMu back in 2002...

Hi quenya!
Welcome to forums!
When you refinance the mortgage, it means you would be taking a new loan on better terms and conditions and pay off the existing loan. You will have to sign the documents related to mortgage during the closing. Thus, you will have to be present in Texas in order to sign the paperwork.
Feel free to ask if you've further queries.

Thank you both for your quick responses! Do either of you know why I wasn't required to be present for my 2002 refi of the same property? I was simply able to sign all the documents here in CA. Is this a new TX state law? If so, are you able to point me to it? Thank you!

Well, I don't know if such a law exists for the state of Texas but as a borrower of the loan you will have to be present at the time of closing. You can contact an attorney and check out if such a law exists for Texas.
