My ex-husband is planning on selling a townhouse in Virginia and my name is also on the mortgage. He said the state of Virginia requires a Quit Claim Deed be signed by me or else I am required to sign all closing paperwork. I do not live in Virginia. I do not want to sign the quit claim deed because I would still be responsible for the mortgage until the house is sold.

Hi druckman!

Welcome to forums!

As your name is on the property documents, you will have to sign the quitclaim deed or else your ex-husband will not be able to sell off the property. It is true that though you sign the quitclaim deed, you would be responsible for the mortgage if your name is on the mortgage docs.

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
