Incorrect sqft on appraisal, what can i do about this?

Posted on: 03rd Jun, 2013 02:33 pm
I am in the process of refi my house, the new lender ordered an appraisal and the appraiser came back with a sqft that was about 9%sqft less than what either my previous appraisal or the county tax record and what i measured myself. After taking my own measurements I am 100% certain he new measurement is incorrect and although i did not agree fully with the county measurement, i do see the new measurement as incorrect. The appraiser is not willing to change his appraisal. I am trying to close the refi in about 7-10days hence do not have much time to spare. If i close can i go back after the appraiser for his mistake? If he is found to be incorrect can I sue him for what this will cost me over the life of the loan. I am hoping they are man enough to admit they had an error and can avoid this but they are increasingly arrogant / frustrating to deal with?
Hi trub!

Welcome to the forums!

After closing, even if you take actions against the appraiser, it won't be of much help. Rather, you should contact some other appraiser and check out if he can give you a proper appraisal.

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.

I think you should get in touch with an attorney, preferably a real estate attorney, to get a solution to your problems. It needs immediate attention.
