IRS extends deadline for filing Tax Returns

Posted on: 03rd Feb, 2007 04:17 am
There's good news for taxpayers in US. They will now have the extra time to file and pay income taxes as April 15 is a Sunday. Also, the following day, that is, April 16 will be celebrated as Emancipation Day (legal holiday in District of Columbia).

It was notified that residents of the District of Columbia and 6 eastern states served by an IRS processing facility in Massachusetts (where people will celebrate the Patriots Day) will file their tax returns on the April 17.

However, a recent declaration given by the Internal Revenue Service says that the whole country will have April 17 as the deadline for filing and payment of federal income tax.
Even in New Jersey, taxpayers subject to gross income tax will have to file their returns on April 17. New Jersey income tax forms, publications or instructions showing April 16, 2007 as the due date for filing tax should be read as April 17, 2007. This is because the forms have already been sent for printing and cannot be changed.

Yes, Sara, this time the filing date has been extended. But under the New Jersey Gross Income Tax Act, calendar taxpayers subject to the gross income tax need to file their tax returns on or prior to April 15.

However, fiscal year taxpayers should file their returns on or before the 15th day of the fourth month of the fiscal year. Under the Act, the filing as well as payment due date can be extended to coincide with any federal personal income tax return filing or payment due date.

The Act also allows that federal filing laws are to be followed on account of such extended filing or payment.
