Not understanding items on my credit report

Posted on: 20th Mar, 2008 11:31 am
I was looking at a copy of my credit report and am a little confused. It appears two collection agencies are reporting the same account. Both list the original creditor as Providian. I believe this account is past 7 years because the Original Creditor is no longer anywhere on my report.
Here is how the two are listed:
PRESIDIO/CM
status:transferred/closed Date opened:1/2001 reported since: 12/2000 last reported 4/2005 Was listed as 30 days late as of Dec 2003. under your statement: account closed at consumers request Creditors statement: Purchased by another lender. the high balance is $1323. Does not list original creditor.

MIDLAND CREDIT MGMT
OC: Providian date opened: 9/2007...reported since 11/2007..last reported 12/2007 original amount $1323...recent balance $1618
Why isn't providian itself not on here anywhere? This card was actually taken out back in 2000 and I got behind on payments (due to health issues) late 2001 and couldn't get Providian to work with me. Could Presidio actually be Providain the OC? If so why are they listing thirty days as of12/2003? Really confused here. This is the only negatives on my account and have good credit now.
Hi Fireyone,

Welcome to the forum.

Collection agencies do sell off a debt to another agency. So, what I feel is, Presidio has sold off your debt to Midland credit mgmt. And, Presidio may have handled the account till Sept. 2007 after which it was sold off to Midland because the record shows Midland started reporting in 2007 itself. But I don't understand how then the report shows Presidio "last reported on 2005. Who handled the account from 2005 to 2007 is something I'm not understanding from your report statements.

If you have all the dates with you as to when you last paid for the account and for how long you were late in paying, I think it's better if you dispute the items with the credit bureau. Or even better if you can talk to Presidio and Midland, I feel that's the best way to solve this problem. May be there have been some reporting errors. So, if you request them for information on how long they have been handling the account and on the late payment records as they have maintained, at least you'll come to know whether it's a reporting error or it's a mishandling of your account.

Hope this helps...

God bless you.

Samantha

I really want to avoid talking to Midland if possibel They have called and they are such rude people to work with. Not only that I don't have any money to work with them. I am assuming Presidio must be Providian itself. All the info I look up dosen't tell me anything. It seems like evryone else I talk to is baffled by this. They list them as cardholder management services.

the key here is whether or not you ever paid the providian account in full. if you did, your documentation forwarded to both of the above collectors ought to eliminate the account and the balance. if you did not pay it in full, it appears that the account may have been transferred to presidio less than 7 years ago, which would keep it within credit reporting regulations concerning elapsed time.

your post indicates the credit report shows an opening date of the account in 2000 - do you dispute this? was the account still active during 2001 at all? if so, your 7 years haven't elapsed.

i think you need to do some more digging - ensure that you can document whatever it is you dispute - and if you wish to clear it up with the credit repositories, give them as much information as you can.

If you have a hospital bill and were paying the hospital payments then they want to try to make you agree to 70 dollars a month. They say they can only make agreements for 70 a month if not they will hav to turn it over to collections, will that then be on my credot. Can they turn it into collection even though you are paying some amount a month even though it is less than they say they can take?

Some places will. I had this happen to me with an old medical bill. The hospitol would not take payment arrangements and only gave you 30 days to pay in full. The bill was a pretty big one. I went through two different collection agencies in three months...none of them crditing the payments I made. Finally I went to the hospitol and demanded to pay the full bill. Good thing was it was taken off my credit report and I didn't have to do a thing. I still am not sure how it went off so quickly.

Well the dr's bill they accepted my offer of paying 25 a month.Thing is so far I have not been able to come up with even the 25 yet.Construction work is so slow here right now.The only money I earn is online. Its the hospital bill that that want 70 a month.

Wow that is an enormous monthly payment for a medical bill. I thought that if you sent them $10 a month that they had to accept it and wasn't allowed to report the debt. I have at least five I am paying on from major surgery last sommer. I send them $10 monthly. I pick one and send them extra from time to time. When it gets low enough for me to handle I pay it off completely. I started with like 8 different bills. One surgery and you get a million different bills from different departments of the hospitol. Doctor (or two) the gas man (can't spell anestigolo?) pharmacy, x-ray...I'm sure you get the picture.

patricia, you may want to have additional discussions with the hospital in that matter. if you make them aware of your almost-complete lack of income, they may have more compassion. by your efforts to pay, they ought to be able to see that you have a desire to pay.

they may simply be stating policy when they maintain that the account must go to collection unless you adhere to a minimum $70 payment.

ask to speak to a supervisor or the head of the billing department. in other words, kick up your situation a notch and see if you have more success.

 :!: I am shocked evrytime I look in my mailbox. The med. bills never quit coming. I pay half them one month and them the following month I pay the next half. Just now getting back to work so hopefully I can give all them monthly payments. I would try the last posters idea. It could work for you.

I would say send them what you can, thatis all you can do.

Well I am worried about the Dr bill becasue I promised to pay 25 and as of yet I have not had it. Hoping for income tax rebate may help. But by then it may be in collections. Wish all those taxes we pay went to pay our medical expenses ,huh?

Hi, I have the same problem. At one time I had a Providan Charge card. I lost my job and filed BK in 1996.
However, I heard Providan was bought by Presido, then Washington Mutual?
Are Providian and Presido one in the same?
I never got a charge off form for taxes...so I wonder if this isn't after BK reporting? It has been so long ago I have no idea...if so this shouldn't even be on there.

I checked my 3 cr reports and found Presidio/cm listing as Date opened 2000. Reported since Jan.2001 Date of status Apr.2005. Last reported status Apr.2005. Type Revolving. Terms NA. Monthly payment NA. Responsibility Individual. Credit limit or orignal amount $1,600. High balance $2,861. Status Transfered, Closed/account charge off $2,861 written off. Charge Off asof Nov 2003 to Apr. 2005. Creditor's statement Purchased by another lender.

Then walks in Midland (M.C.M.)
same providian card different account numbers:
Date opened Sep.2007
Reported since Nov. 2007
Date of status Nov 2007
Last reported Dec. 2007
Responsibility Individual
Credit limit or original amount $2,882
High blance NA
Recent Balance $4,100 as of Dec. 2007
Status: collection account. $4,100 past due as of Dec 2007.
Collection as of Dec.2007, Nov. 2007.
This account is scheduled to continue on record until Jan 2010.

I never got anything from 2005 to 2008 on this.
SOL is 4 years in CA.
But it can be reported for up to 7 years on CR.
However, Midland has re-aged the debt and looks like almost doubled the amount due. This seems to be FCRA and FDCPA violation.
I really don't want to DV Midland as of yet...too much stress. But have disputed it on the big 3 CR by letter.
Any suggestions?

Welcome Diana.

Providian and Presidio are not the same company. Providian Financial Corporation is one of the leading credit card issuer in the United States. But now Providian joined Washington Mutual family of companies. Presidio is a non profit government collection agency.

I think Providian handed over you debt to Presidio. And then Presidio may have sold it to Midland Collection.

You should ask Midland for debt validation your due amount has been doubled.

If you think FCRA and FDCPA violation has been occurred then you can file complaint at https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup

Let me if you have any more queries.

I also have Providian and yes they were changed to Washington Mutual.I agree with the above poster . It appears they have revived a dead acct and doubled the charge maybe to gt your attention? You think?I heard that as long as you are communicating with them it is an active case.

I found in the interm that Washingtion Mutual had sold all of their accounts to an outfit called SST and people were having a hard time with them.
However, 2 year mystery of where this account was.
Plus time-barred.
I will DV them and go vrom there.
Thanks!
