jeanie, you are correct. one of the first things you'll want to do is to review your own credit file. you can go to annualcreditreport.com to do so for free. i would advise against worrying about what your scores are, as the most important thing is for you to see what's on the report, and, therefore, what you need to do to improve the credit. your scores will become important later on, after you've taken steps to fix what's wrong and when you may be ready to apply for new credit.
if you know (pretty much) what your credit is like, there's little sense in seeing the numbers, which can cost you money you'd be better served to use in clearing some debts.

First check ur credit report which can be obtained free and you need to check where u stand. then u can start fixing from there.
