public information in credit report

Posted on: 12th Oct, 2006 12:47 pm
I wanted to know about the information that is recorded in the public information section of a credit report.
Hi Linda,

This section has information about all legal matters that affect your credit.

And normally there are 8 types of records that are listed to include civil action judgments, tax liens and bankruptcy.

Hi Linda,

In the credit report you will normally see the following records listed in the public information section;
  1. Bankruptcy - Any bankruptcy information

  2. Tax Lien - Claims which are filed by any tax agency for back taxes

  3. Legal Items - Normally judgments from civil action against a person

  4. Martial Item - Any divorce issues and court filings in this regard

  5. Information on Financial Counseling - Whether you have participated in any such counseling

  6. Financial Statement - Any lien creditor files against your property

  7. Foreclosure Information - If a mortgaged property was taken by the lender, it will also be listed

  8. Garnishments - Any court order to hold your wages for repaying debts

For all these records there will be summary information which will state the type, status, date of filing, its reference no., closing date, filed under which court, amount and also the notes as provided to the bureau.

Thanks
Colin

Let me add few other things which may show up in the summary if there was a bankruptcy listed.

There would be a field named as liability which will state the total amount you were found due to pay the creditors legally.

Also an exempt amount field which will provide the details of the claimed amounts against you but the court had decided that you are not legally liable for payment of those amounts.

Lastly a field named asset amount which will list the total amount from the valuation of your personal assets used by the court at the decision is made.

Hi Linda,

The public section on a credit report also lists information on collections. There is information provided on a list of delinquent accounts turned over to an agency for debt collection. Such accounts are regarded as closed. But collection agencies, creditors and lenders can report information to the credit reporting companies, a new version of the account can appear on the credit report. This information has a negative impact on your report and hence on your credit score. So it is better to contact the agency so that they can correct any incorrect information that has been reported.

If you are interested to get any other information on Credit report , visit our section on this topic.

Thanks,

Caron.
