My dad who is now deceased owned a home in Florida and as far as I know the mortgage is only in his name and not his ex-wife name, but since I haven't seen him in more tha 20 yrs prior to his death I am not sure of that. after his death he had a mortgage balance of $140,000.00 now his lender is saying I am responsible for this loan. I had nothing to due with the purchase or mortgage on this property and the lender has put a lien on my home in Rhode Island saying I am responsible for his mortgage is this legal. He also had an ex-wife however I’m not sure if her name is on the deed or mortgage. I see no legal reason how I can be held responsible for his debt can you please help me. Brenda
Hi chantillycondo!

Welcome to forums!

If your name is not mentioned on the mortgage deed, then you can't be held responsible for the mortgage. You should check out the mortgage docs in order to find out whether or not your name is mentioned in it as a borrower.

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
