unable to decide

we have found four places in the last two weeks in nice neighborhoods which are within our price range. but the problem is that city is quite far from the place I work. I talked with one in my office who in the city where I want to purchase the house, he said that its not bad. what my actual concern is that the distance is going to be lengthy & could become a issue with the cost of gas. I also searched in the city where my office is but cannot find any house which is comparable to this one & also not in your range. So I am struggling deciding about moving to the other city. All said, I work during the week and have weekends off, thats going to be some relief as I'd have time to spend the weekends at house. Have any one of you faced such similar problem while looking for a house. Is closeness to work be a big factor? any suggestions would be great
I have always been a commuting on an average 50 min. one way. I am also going to purchase a house which will be same kind of distance away. Frankly, I am used to it. :) For me living close to family was more important. My DH or myself hadn't considered moving close to our jobs. Main reason is that in where I work it is much more expensive. And where DH works is out of the way from everything else & price wise also completely beyond our range.

Hi Badkerhanian,

I moved from a place 5 miles away from office to a place 60 miles away. To tell you the truth I absolutely hate the commute. But I love my home. It was not possible for me to afford a home closer to my job. Sometimes the commute is an hour & 25 mins., sometimes 2 hrs. I also looked at jobs closer to home but pays are no where near what I need to make. One thing is that pulling into my garage after a long commute makes me feel a lot better.

How flexible is your job? As flex hrs. & an understanding boss helps. My boss also commutes & knows about the traffic woes, so he is perfectly understanding. Think about other points also. In case you have school aged children then your decision will be based on that. You won't like to work miles away & your kid be in school with no one around if something were to happen.

Well my normal commute is round about an hour. Luckily more than half of it is on bus, so I can sleep/read... so I don't mind really about the distance and time. The fact is, my commute has always been lengthy.

I would suggest making the commute if you really love the home.

Hi Badkerhanian,

A slight difference in rent/mortgage could get eaten up by increased transportation expenses. You have to factor in your tolerance to traffic also.

Looking at it from what I think, you should buy where you will be happiest. You can change jobs, might want to change careers, can get pink-slipped etc. etc. But if you are able to find a home where you want to be then you will be happiest at the end of it all.

Hello Badkerhanian,

Well, I have faced a problem where I my house was quite away from the place I worked. I could not spend time with my family. Sometimes, the houses that I searched for buying were not of my standard of living and sometimes beyond my reach financially. So, I rented a house closer to my office. This saved the money that I was spending in commuting and was not taxing for my body. :)

For me the commute is very STRESSFUL to say the least.

I live at Harford County, 95 miles from where I work as even after locating a home in the price range, the taxes were killing me & had to get this present one. We have a large family and needed 4 BR & for myself needed a large yard.

I have a $2100 hoopty for a commuter car and that saves a bit on gas. Right now there is construction going on in most of the routes that I take to work and that is adding onto the time it takes & the stress of it.

But otherwise I am ok, after reaching work I take some time to unwind and feel not too bad. I feel my present house is worth the stress & effort in commuting as I am having my privacy and the big lot the house is on.

You will have to look at it from these factors and decide if you will be able to take the stress of every day commuting.
