Hi cclaire!

Welcome to forums!

Your creditors will not be able to garnish your social security income. However, they can definitely garnish your savings account or place a lien on any other property that you have. As far as the old debt is concerned, you can contact the creditors and ask for a modified payment plan to pay off the dues. This would be a better option rather than filing bankruptcy.

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.
