Property Tax Consultant

I signed a contract in 2008 to see if this company could reduce my 2007 property taxes. An hour after I signed the contract I was told by the companies owner that they could not help me since I paid quite a bit for our home. I then assumed that the contact was voided and threw it away since I was told they could not help me.

Starting about 4 months ago they started sending me an invoice stating they reduced my 2009 taxable amount. (everyone in my sub divisions taxable amount was reduced due to the economy). The company is stating that I had to send them in writing that I no longer needed their services and that this was stated in the contact I signed. They also stated that they are going to put a lien on my home if I do not pay them the $750.00.

I find this practice to be very unethical, but not sure what I can do. Any advice?

Tammy
Contact the assessor's office and find out if the reduction was the result of the consultant's efforts. If it was, you should probably pay the consultant. If not, then tell the consultant you will not pay and that you will send his demand letter to the state's Attorney General. In Texas, you can complain to the state's licensing board.
