Adding name to a mortgage

Posted on: 24th Sep, 2010 10:24 am
my father passed away recently leaving my mother with the mortgage. can i add my name to the mortgage? does it require a refinance for that to happen. i'll be helping out with her mortgage payments.
the loan is a 30 year fixed conventional.

also, what happens with the deceased spouse on the mortgage. does the bank remove him from the mortgage?
i don't know how that works.

any info is appreciated.
Hi santinou!

Welcome to forums!

Your mother and you will have to refinance your mortgage in order to remove your deceased father from the loan and add your name to the mortgage doc.

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.

What happens if I decide not to refinance and leave all as is. Does the bank remove the deceased spouse from the mortgage anyway; or does it leave it the same. - As if he were still alive-

Hi santinou,

As far as I know, the bank will not remove the deceased person's name from the mortgage. You and your mother will have to remove his name from the mortgage by refinancing it.
