SJM Marketing - Is it good to deal with?

SJM Marketing is a payday loan company having associates like Ellis Crosby and Platinum B Services to look after the collections. The company has a bad reputation in the market and as such people have been complaining about its activities which they feel are often illegal.

What are debtors saying about SJM Marketing?

  • At times the company may not provide contact information; as such the debtor fails to contact it for loan repayment. But all of a sudden the company may call up and threaten the debtor to make the payment immediately or else he would be sent to jail.
  • SJM takes out money from debtors' accounts at regular intervals even though the latter doesn't owe as much cash as is withdrawn by the company. And even after repeated requests to stop, they continue to withdraw from the account. At times, they even threaten to take legal action against the debtor.
  • The company deals with collection agencies which often take out money from debtors' checking accounts without prior notice.
  • The company has often accused its debtors of writing a bad check even if they haven't written any check as such.
  • The company provides unauthorized loan funds thereby depositing the loan amount into the debtor's bank account even though the latter hasn't asked for it.
  • At times, debtors make repeated calls but there's no one to respond on behalf of the company. It's hard to locate SJM and get any in touch with its officials.

What to do if you're in trouble with SJM Marketing?

If you haven't taken a loan from SJM and yet receive repeated calls from the company, then send them a debt validation letter thereby asking them to validate the debt. If they fail to validate the debt, then it's obvious that they have tried to scare you by talking about legal action against you. This is a violation of the FDCPA and as such you can file a complaint with the FTC or the State Attorney General for any legal action to be taken against SJM Marketing.

However, if you have really taken out the loan, then the best thing to do is to pay off the loan asap. But if they threaten you for not paying extra charges, then it's better to take legal action and avoid being harassed by SJM or other collection agencies.

I have this problem some company named SJM Marketing which I recieved a loan from has no information that is credible for me to repay them back. The number they gave me doesn't work and I've been trying to pay them back for almost 3 months two weeks ago a guys calls and tells me about how much I owe I inform him that I haven't been able to get in contact with anyone and if I don't handle the situation in the manner they wish I'm going to jail or court whatever accents is very hard to distinguish. Anyways I've been trying to get the number for these people and the bank doesn't have one. And neither does the internet searches, in so many words it seems as if the company doesn't exist. No they are telling me i owe this amount of more than 800 dollars. I've never heard of this before but they are continually taking 90 out every other week. Now what should I do I want to get this company off my back but how do I know that this company is giving my money to the correct people.
The way they have been taking money out of your checking account shows that they won't refund you the money. However, you need to stop them from taking out any more funds. Contact the bank offcials and have the account closed asap.

I've also had the same problem with just SJM people. My loan was for $150, they took twice the amount out of my bank account until I had stop payments on them. And now, 2 years later I'm getting calls from people that are not SJM, but are saying that I owe SJM money still. And yes, they don't speak English, and when I told them that it's been paid and I have the proof, they say that it's not been paid and that I'm stealing money and that they're gonna take it to court. My friend said they can't file a lawsuit cause they're in a different state. But it's all very frustrating.

If you've paid off the debts, they won't be able to sue you. Moreover, you have the proof of the payments. You can complain about their activities to the BBB and the Attorney General.

Hi barrett!

Welcome to forums!

I think you should contact an attorney in order to deal with the situation. Do not deal with the company alone. The attorney will guide you in dealing with them.

I just got a phone call from a collection agency about a debt of 590.00 that i owe to this company. The collection agency is Paramount recovery services. I had to go clear back to 2/05/2007 on my bank statements to find when I received a loan from them that I don't remember giving authoration for and I cannot find on line the documents to verify it. They took out 90.00 every 2 weeks after that up until I stopped it in JAN/09 which adds up to alot of money, 2970.00 to be exact. The collection company told me fill out a police report on fraudralent activity in my bank account and fax them a copy and they will close the account. Is this true and they also said they were going take me to court and garnish my wages if i didn't do this.

Welcome TIMOTHY,

If any fraudulent activity has taken place, then you should immediately inform the police. If you really owe them money, then they can take legal steps against you to recover the dues. In my opinion, you should take some legal help to resolve the issue.

Hi weezie,

Do you really owe them the money? If not, then you should contact an attorney and take legal actions against them as they are harassing you. If you owe them the money then you can settle your debts by negotiating with them. You may even consider the offer of paying $565.00 and settle the debts.

Hi crowhunter!

Welcome to forums!

As you are not sure whether or not you've taken the loan, you can ask the collection agency to validate your debts. You can contact the collection agency within 5 days from the date they contact you and ask them to validate the debt they are speaking about. If the collection agency does not validate your debts, then they cannot collect the dues anymore or contact you.

You can check out a sample debt validation letter from the given page:

Feel free to ask if you've further queries.

Sjm has called me at work and said they are sending a proces server here to my work and serve me papers. They called my human resources and mu manager stating they are coming to serve me court paper. this company is a farce. Close your bank accouhts put freezes on anything to do with this company. They are terrible. They try to scare people into paying them. They have to file suit in your county/state they cannot come serve papers themselves. Watch out for this scam company.

I have recieved a call from Jim with Goldstein O'Shay and Devine saying that they are collecting on the debt that I owe SJM Marketing. I never wrote them a check and this is from two years ago. He said he is going to Issue a warrent if I dont pay 500.00 by tomorrow. Is this legal or even possible. He said and I quote " well have fun spending the holidays in jail" I dont know what to do?

that type of harassment is illegal. if they call you back, tell them you've contacted the federal trade commission and that you let the ftc know precisely what you've been threatened with.

don't just tell them - actually do this. go to ftc.gov and search for where you can register a complaint. they cannot threaten you with jail - that's not just nasty, it's stupid also.
